Job Costing: The Number That Changes Everything
Most contractors know their total revenue and their bank balance — and almost nothing in between. That's how profitable companies quietly lose money: one underbid job eats the margin from three good ones, and nobody sees it until year-end. Job costing fixes that. Every project gets its own P&L — labor, materials, subs, equipment, overhead allocation — so you know which jobs make money, which crews perform, and which customers are worth keeping.
When you know your real cost per job, everything downstream gets easier: bidding, pricing, scheduling, and knowing when you can afford to grow.
Financials Your Banker — and Your Tax Strategist — Can Use
Clean books aren't just about peace of mind. Bonding companies, lenders, and licensing boards all want current, accurate financial statements — and messy books cost you real opportunities. Just as important: tax strategy is only as good as the data underneath it. Our accounting team keeps your numbers clean monthly so your tax plan is built on reality, not estimates.
Bookkeeping That Stays Current — the Foundation Everything Sits On
Great tax strategy and accurate job costing both depend on one unglamorous thing: bookkeeping that's actually done every month, correctly. We own that for you. Bank and credit-card reconciliations, transactions coded to the right job and account, accounts receivable and payable kept current, payroll tied out, and a real monthly close — not a shoebox reconciled once a year in a panic before taxes are due.
This is where most contractors are quietly bleeding: a bookkeeper who codes everything to "Materials," no job tags, and books that run months behind. We rebuild it so your books are current by a set date each month and every dollar lands where it belongs. That's the only way the numbers above it — job costing, WIP, cash flow, and your tax plan — can be trusted.
The Construction Accounting Most Firms Don't Touch
General bookkeepers stop at income and expenses. Construction accounting has its own layer, and getting it wrong distorts both your financials and your taxes. We handle it: work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, over- and under-billings, retainage tracked as its own receivable and payable, and revenue recognized correctly under the percentage-of-completion or completed-contract method depending on your contracts and your size.
Method choice matters for tax, too. Smaller contractors under the gross-receipts threshold (indexed annually — confirm the current-year figure) can often use the completed-contract method to defer income, while larger or long-term-contract work falls under the percentage-of-completion rules of IRC §460. We make sure your books support the method you're actually entitled to — and that your WIP schedule and your tax return tell the same story your bonding company sees.
Real Estate Investors and Developers, Too
If you hold rentals, flip, or develop, your accounting has its own demands: entity- and property-level books, proper capitalization of improvements versus deductible repairs, tracking basis and depreciation, and clean records that make cost segregation and 1031 exchanges defensible if you're ever asked to prove them. We keep books a lender, a partner, and the IRS can all follow — per entity, per property — so the tax strategy sitting on top of them holds up.
One Team for Books and Taxes — Not a Relay Race
Here's what makes this different: we're not a bookkeeper you hand off to a separate CPA at tax time. Bring your whole financial operation to us — bookkeeping, accounting, payroll, and tax filing and strategy — and it all runs on one set of numbers, under one roof. No re-explaining your business to three people. No "your bookkeeper's books don't match what your CPA filed." No January scramble to reconstruct the year.
The books we keep all year are the same books your tax plan is built on and the same books we file from. That's the whole point of moving it to us: the left hand and the right hand are the same hand. Already have a CPA you love? We can work alongside them — but most clients find that once the books, the strategy, and the filing live in one place, everything gets simpler, tighter, and usually cheaper than paying a separate bookkeeper, CPA, and advisor.
